Welcome to the 2026 Workshop on Tools for Research in Animal Social Evolution (TRASE)

The TRASE workshop is a hands-on, three-day event on methods & tools in social evolution for early-career researchers in Greece and the Eastern Mediterranean. Participants will gain practical experience with state-of-the-art methods for studying social behaviour, evolution and group dynamics in wild populations, including GPS tracking, proximity sensors, advanced behavioural analysis tools and agent-based modelling. The workshop aims to foster collaboration and new research directions, introducing the study of social behaviour and evolution in the region.

Participation & Programme Overview

TRASE is aimed at Early Career Researchers (graduate, postgraduate students, and postdocs) but is open to anyone interested in methods to study animal behaviour and evolution. Previous experience with computational techniques and programming are not a requirement. Throughout the workshop, there will be two plenaries by established researchers, presentations by the organizing team, and hands-on practicals on data analysis and computer simulations.

Key sessions include:

  • Introduction to data analysis in R
  • Measuring social behaviour in the lab
  • Measuring social behaviour in the field
  • Analysing social network data
  • Statistical analyses in evolutionary biology
  • Tools and methods for analysing behavioural data
  • Tools and methods for simulating social systems

More details will follow soon at our programme page.
